Israel Hamas War : It has been almost 9 months since the Israel-Hamas war. Palestinian health officials say more than 38,000 people have now died in Israel’s attack on Gaza. At the same time, 2.3 million people have become homeless, but these figures are not true. The Lancet Medical Journal has released a report regarding this, in which quite shocking figures have emerged. According to the report, Gaza’s health ministry estimates that about 38,000 people have died in the Palestine region as of June, while The Lancet says the actual death toll could be as high as 1,86,000. This means that the number of deaths in Gaza may be five times more than the estimate of the Health Ministry.
This is how the dead bodies were counted
The Lancet authors said that some people have expressed doubts about the accuracy of the Health Ministry’s figures, because many bodies may still be buried under the debris of the war and therefore may not be counted. Apart from this, there is a possibility of many deaths due to reasons like disease due to war. In the early days of the war, the death toll was counted on the basis of the number of dead bodies arriving in hospitals. The data included names and identities of most of those killed.
More than 10 thousand people buried under the debris
The authors of The Lancet said, due to the destruction of infrastructure, it is becoming difficult for the Gaza Health Ministry to collect data on the dead. This is why the ministry has now become dependent on information received from the media or hospitals. The authors further noted that Gaza’s health ministry now reports the number of unidentified bodies separately from total deaths. Of the approximately 35,000 deaths till May this year, 30 percent of the bodies were of unidentified people. The authors also say that the number of deaths may have been understated in the ministry’s figures. At the same time, United Nations estimates indicate that more than 10,000 people may be buried under the debris in Gaza, where about 35 percent of the buildings have been destroyed.
At the same time, AP report states that according to recent estimates from Gaza’s Health Ministry, more than 38,200 people have died in the Israel-Hamas war. This war started last year in October 2023, when Hamas, the Palestinian organization that rules Gaza, launched a terrorist attack on Israel, in which about 1,200 people were killed.
