Vellore (Tamil Nadu):
Four people allegedly gang -raped a doctor after kidnapping an auto in Katipadi in 2022, sentenced to 20 years rigorous imprisonment by the women court here.
The incident created political displeasure in the state, demanding strict action against criminals.
The police identified the suspects arrested in the crime as Parthiban, an auto driver, Mani alias Manikandan, a daily wage worker and their friends Bharat and Santosh. Police said the fifth suspect, a teenager, is facing trial before the Juvenile Justice Board.
He was presented before Mageshwari Banu Rekha of Vellore Sessions Judge (Fast Track Mahailla Court) on Thursday, who honored the sentences and fined each of them Rs 25,000.
The victim was waiting for an auto in Katpadi at 12.30 am on March 16, 2022 with his male colleague, when the five-borne gang of five convinced him to ride on the vehicle, claiming that he was claimed A share is auto. However, the pair were taken to the bed of the Palar river, where the gang attacked the lady doctor’s associate and raped her after allegedly drown his colleague at the knife-point, police said.
Both were robbed of their mobile phones, two sovereign gold jewelery and ATM cards, with which the gang returned Rs 40,000.
The incident came to light after three gang members were allegedly arrested in connection with an alcoholic dispute. During interrogation, he confessed to gang -raping two others, arresting the remaining suspects.
An online complaint was later received from the lady doctor, the police said.
