Congress hit after Himanta Sarma’s claim on Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, in his Republic Day address in Dibrugarh today, once again raised the issue of BR Ambedkar, claiming that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru kept him out of the Constituent Assembly, which drafted the Constitution. “Babasaheb Ambedkar is the founder of our Constitution. There were many challenges in his inclusion in the Constituent Assembly. His name was not in the first list of members of the Constituent Assembly which was drafting the Constitution,” the Chief Minister said.

He said that Jogendranath Mondal, a Dalit leader from East Bengal, had asked Dr. Ambedkar’s name was proposed in his place and only then did he get the opportunity to be a part of the historical work.

“Today I remember a statement by Pandit Nehru about Ambedkar’s inclusion. Nehru had claimed that Ambedkar was a trouble-maker and wanted to keep him out of the constituent assembly,” he said.

The Chief Minister further claimed that Ambedkar was included because Mahatma Gandhi recognized the merit in him and trusted his ability and took a stand against the position that Nehru had taken.

“This decision of Gandhi proved fruitful by the Constituent Assembly under the leadership of Ambedkar, which gave us a Constitution based on equality and fraternity,” he said.

The Chief Minister’s statement has drawn sharp reactions from the Congress.

Debrata Saik, leader of the opposition in the Assam Assembly, condemned the remarks and alleged that it was an attempt to defame Babasaheb Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru by distorting the truth.

“Initially Ambedkar was elected to the constituency assembly from Bengal. But after partition his constituency went to Pakistan and he had to vacate his seat. It was Pandit Nehru and Sardar Patel who went to Gandhiji to discuss this seat in the constituent assembly by vacating one seat from Pune,” Mr Saikia told reporters.
