Rapid development in Cat B and Cat C+ cities

Visa data highlights the increase in credit card expenditure in Cat B and C+ cities between 2019 and 2024. This growth is four times higher than the 1.4X increase in metro cities.

Cities like Trichy, Bhubaneswar, and Jaipur in Cat B, as well as emerging areas such as Tirupur and Sangli in Kat C+are at the forefront of this change.

E-commerce and digital services move forward

These areas have increased online expenditure, especially in categories like apparel, travel, gaming and online education.

Cat C+ Jumped from 53% to 73% in the cities.

Visa reported an increase of 16X on an increase of 9X in online gaming and digital content consumption in these areas.

Financial inclusion opportunities

Despite the rapid growth, the formal credit penetration in these areas is low, which gives an opportunity to provide products according to financial institutions.

In 2019, the formal credit penetration in CAT B+ cities was just 10.5% compared to 42.4% in metro regions.

Visa identifies four major areas for success in these areas:

  • Consumers seek flexible repayment options.
  • Reward programs and exclusive benefits are highly valuable.
  • User -friendly, multilingual financial products are preferred.
  • Safe, reliable digital payment methods are in demand with effective support mechanisms.
