DMK protests against Center’s 3 -Language Sutra under National Education Policy – CNBC TV18

Thousands of Dravidian Munnetra Kazgam (DMK) party workers gathered in Chennai to stage a massive performance against the recent comments made by Center Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The minister had said that the Education Fund will not be issued to Tamil Nadu under Samagra Sika Yojana until the state accepted the Center’s National Education Policy (NEP).

Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed the National Education Policy, especially the support of the three -language formula. This protest stems from the concerns that policy is a secret attempt to impose Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states. The three -language formula suggests that students learn English and any two Indian languages, one of which is often Hindi by default.

The state government’s attitude remains that learning Hindi should be a matter of choice and not compulsion. The belief is that the chances of a student’s career do not rest on learning Hindi, and therefore, Tamil Nadu does not see any justification for adopting three -language formulas.

Tamil Nadu has a long history of opposing Hindi allegations. The state witnessed anti -landmark Hindi protests in the 1930s and 1960s, in which students and workers were taken to the streets to oppose compulsory Hindi education. These protests played an important role in shaping Tamil Nadu’s language policies, strengthening Tamil and English dominance in the education system.

The primary question is: Will Tamil Nadu accept and confirm the Center’s National Education Policy? Given the strong political and cultural opposition of the state for three -language formulas, it is not possible that Tamil Nadu will comply with further interactions. As the political debate around the NEP comes out, the resistance of the state assumes that the imposition of linguistic is expected to continue for the future.
