NEET-OG mandate for medical education abroad
The Supreme Court’s decision comes after a petition challenging the validity of NMC regulation, which was introduced in 2018. This rule suggests that Indian students who want to study MBB in foreign universities will have to pass the NEET-UG exam. Additionally, students returning to India after completing their medical education abroad should meet further criteria to practice as licensed medical professionals in the country.
While the petitioners argued that this regulation faced unnecessary obstacles for the students, the Supreme Court dismissed the petition, the rule was “fair and transparent” and declared legally valid. The court emphasized that regulation does not deny any statutory provisions, maintaining the importance of standardized tests to maintain the quality of medical education and professionals.
Justification of Supreme Court
Justice Bra Gavai and K. Vinod Chandran, who was part of the bench, re-confirmed that NEET-UG requires a uniform standard of medical education for all Indian students, no wherever they study. The court highlighted that this regulation works to maintain continuity and maintain the quality of medical professionals entering India’s healthcare system.
This decision emphasizes the need for general entry tests like NEET-NG to preserve the integrity and standardization of medical education at India and international levels.
Effect of decision
In this decision, Indian students have important implications for those wishing to pursue MBBS abroad. Now they should ensure that they clean the NEET-NG exam before seeking admission in any foreign medical institute. The court’s verdict further outlined the importance of meeting national medical education standards, even for those who obtained their degrees outside India.
Finally, the Supreme Court’s decision maintains the regulatory structure set up by NMC in 2018, strengthening the important role of NEET-igs, ensuring that medical professionals across the country maintain high academic and professional standards.
