Thousands of people in cities across the US protested the cut of the Trump administration on 7 March to scientific funding.
In New York City, more than a thousand people gathered at Washington Square Park, “Fund Science Not War!” People indicated in support of science and reduced the cuts, including one: “Science makes America great.”
This protest was one of at least 30 “stand up science” rallies across cities across the US, which was expected to have more than 150 programs worldwide. Researchers also went out of laboratories as part of protest.
Since the inauguration of President Donald Trump on 20 January, the administration has canceled or frozen the federal funding of billions of dollars for scientific and medical research. Many cuts have focused on research related to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), as well as research on climate change and gender. The administration has also fired thousands of federal employees in American scientific agencies, including the National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration, National Health Institutes and Disease Control and Prevention Centers.
“Science is something that has to be valuable. I think everyone has to live here. I will be in my laboratory working with my cells, but I think we have to bring awareness about these problems, ” Ana VivanitoA neurocientist who participated in the protest against New York in Weel Cornell Medicine. She was taking a sign in which it was read: “So bad, even introverted here.”

More than 1500 people attended the New York event, where prominent researchers also spoke, including Harvard theoretical physicist Lisa Randel, Meta Ayan Lake Chief Scientist and former NIH Director and Nobel Prize winner Herold Vermus.
Researchers around the world participated in the New York protest. âAmerica was very extraordinary for science. We really believe that science made America great. Now we are very disappointed because everything is going to be destroyed, âsays a French cancer biologist who asked to remain anonymous.
New scientist The rally also spoke to scientists from Argentina, Israel, Canada and Australia. Many of them were worried that they might have to leave the US to continue their work. “I am very sad. I felt that I would make it my home and do my science here,” Vivinato, which is from Argentina.
Dennis RobinsA science teacher at Hunter College in New York, was taking a hint which wrote: “Now I am a crazy scientist.” He says that he gave the same indication in the protests in 2017 in 2017 “Science for March”. “It’s surprising that we still have to rally for science, that someone has to speak for his meaning in democracy,” he says.
