New Delhi:

A Delhi court on Monday dismissed the plea of Jammu and Kashmir MP Engineer Rashid, who was jailed, demanded detention parole to participate in the Parliament session.

Judge Chander Jit Singh of the additional session dismissed the petition and on March 19 posted an order on Rashid’s regular bail plea.

A detailed order is awaited.

On March 3, the court asked the NIA to respond to the petition, after which it reserved his decision after hearing the arguments.

The application filed by Advocate Vikit Oberoi for Rashid on 27 February sought relief on the basis that Rashid was an MP and needed to participate in the upcoming session to fulfill his public duty.

Known as Engineer Rashid, Sheikh Abdul Rashid defeated Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Baramullah in the 2024 Lok Sabha.

Rashid’s regular bail application is currently pending before the court.

The second part of the budget session of Parliament will start from March 10 and end on 4 April.

On September 10, the judge granted Rashid interim bail so that he could campaign for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Rashid surrendered himself before Tihar Jail on 27 October.

Rashid has been registered in Tihar Jail since 2019 after being arrested by the NIA under the illegal activities (prevention) Act in the 2017 terror funding case.

The 90 -member JK Vidhan Sabha was held in three phases from 18 September to 1 October. The results were declared on 8 October in which the National Conference-Congress alliance won a clear majority with 48 seats.

The Delhi High Court on February 24 directed the Sessions Judge to decide Rashid’s bail plea in the case.

The High Court passed the direction in view of the order of December 24, 2024, by which the session court requested the District Judge to transfer the case nominated to the court to try MPs.

Rashid’s name cropped during an investigation by Kashmiri businessman Zahur Watli, who was allegedly arrested by Nia for funding terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir Valley.

The NIA filed a charge sheet against several persons, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Tabiba founder Hafiz Saeed and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salhuddin.

Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in 2022 after being convicted for the allegations.
