Chennai/New Delhi:
Tamil Nadu’s opposition party AIADMK and BJP will face the state elections simultaneously under the leadership of former Chief Minister Edappi’s Palaniswami (EPS), Union Home Minister Amit Shah said at a joint press conference in Chennai today.
Both sides were also earlier in an alliance. The assembly elections for which both hands have got hands are scheduled next year.
Mr. Shah, who was flured by EPS and BJP’s BJP chief K Annamalai, said, “We will create a general minimum program,”
Mr. Shah reminded of a major victory in the Lok Sabha in 1998 when the BJP and AIADMK formed a alliance starring by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. At one point, the BJP-AIADMK alliance won 30 of the 39 Lok Sabha seats, he said.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will comfortably win in Tamil Nadu, Mr. Shah said.
On how the coalition will work, the Home Minister said that the BJP will not interfere in AIADMK’s internal affairs.
For a question about the fine details of the alliance, in a light vein, Mr. Shah requested people not to allow the BJP to handle some cases on their own and do not overburd the AIADMK.
The Home Minister said, “We also do some work. You don’t worry about everything. Leave some concerns for us.”
After the BJP announced the nomination of Nanner Nagenthiran, it was announced that the Tamil Nadu chief of the party to change Ki Annamalai. Shri Shah thanked Shri Annamalai for his “unprecedented contribution” to the party. The BJP will take advantage of the organizational skills of the youth leader in the party’s national structure, Mr. Shah said.
The BJP said that the announcement of Alliance has no link with the decision to change Mr. Annamalai, as the decision to contest the election in a tie-up with AIADMK had already decided.
In the last two elections – Lok Sabha and Final Assembly Elections – -DDMK fought strongly to perform. After Jayalalithaa’s death in 2016, AIADMK formed an alliance with BJP.
During the 2021 state elections, AIADMK and BJP were in alliance, resulting in the BJP won four seats. However, AIADMK formed relations with BJP in 2023.
