Kathmandu: Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, surrounded by political crisis, will face the confidence motion in Parliament on Friday. A day before this, on Thursday, adding to his troubles, Nepali Congress and ‘CPN-UML’ issued a whip to their MPs and directed them to vote against him. KP Sharma Oli-led CPN-UML, the largest party in the ruling coalition, had last week withdrawn support to the ‘Prachanda’-led government and entered into a power-sharing agreement with the Nepali Congress. It is believed that Dahal will not be able to win the trust vote.
What are the political equations saying?
Nepali Congress, the largest party in Nepal’s 275-member House of Representatives, currently has 89 seats, while CPN-UML has 78 seats. Both parties have a total of 167 members against the majority of 138 seats in the lower house. Prachanda’s Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre) has 32 seats. Prachanda needs the support of 138 members in the House to save his government but he is likely to get the support of 63 members and in such a situation it is considered certain that his government will lose the trust vote on Friday.
Whip issued to MPs
According to the news of ‘My Republica’ newspaper, Nepali Congress directed its members to attend the House and vote against the confidence motion of ‘Prachanda’. Similarly, ‘CPN-UML’ has also issued a whip to its MPs asking them to vote against the confidence motion. This joint effort by Nepali Congress and CPN-UML is to oust the Prachanda-led government and form their own government at the federal and provincial levels.
important meeting held
‘CPN-UML’ President Oli had met Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba on Wednesday. The purpose of the meeting of the two leaders was to discuss the future strategy and formation of a new coalition government after the Nepali Congress and Nepali Communist Party-Unified Maoist Leninist (CPN-UML) alliance. During the two-hour meeting held at Deuba’s residence in Budhanilkanth on the outskirts of Kathmandu, the two leaders discussed matters such as collecting signatures in favor of the new Oli-led alliance and handing it over to the President.
This formula has been decided
CPN-UML sources said the two leaders discussed forming a new government and inviting smaller parties to form a government of national consensus under Oli’s leadership. The two parties have signed an agreement to lead the government by turns for the remaining three-year term of Parliament. According to the agreement, Oli will become the Prime Minister for one and a half years in the first phase.

Last week, CPN-UML had demanded Prachanda’s immediate resignation. But Prachanda had announced that even after the resignation of eight CPN-UML ministers, he would not step down but would face the trust vote in Parliament. Sources said that the new government supported by Nepali Congress under the leadership of 72-year-old Oli will take oath on Sunday. There have been 13 governments in Nepal in the last 16 years, which is a sign of political instability in the Himalayan country. (Language)
