Bill Nelson Retires as NASA Chief; Janet Petro Named Acting Administrator

Bill Nelson took over from his role as NASA administrator as Donald Trump started his second presidential post on 20 January 2021. After a career of over five decades in public service, after a career of more than five decades in public service, Nelson announced His retirement with NASA deputy administrator Palm Melroy. Janet Petro, director of the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, was first named NASA Administrator. Nelson thanked the opportunity to serve, calling his term a humble experience.

During Nelson’s time as the head of NASA, several landmark missions were initiated. According to the agency’s records, these include the deployment of James Web Space Telescope, Dart Esteroid Mission, Europea Clipper, and Artemis 1 – the inaugural flight of the Artemis Lunar program launched during Trump’s first presidency. Nelson, a former astronaut, who rode on the STS -61 -C mission in 1986, brought a unique perspective led by the agency.
