Kolkata:
Amid tight security, Sanjay Roy, convicted of raping and murdering an on-duty doctor at the government-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, was brought to a court here on Monday for sentencing, police said.
Roy was brought out of the jail around 10.15 am accompanied by several police vehicles.
An official said the Sealdah court has been deployed with around 500 policemen and officials have left no stone unturned to prevent any untoward incident.
Despite heavy police deployment, many people gathered at the court premises and some were seen attempting to climb over the railing to catch a glimpse of the convict.
The parents of the deceased doctor, who were going to the court, said they have faith in the judiciary to deliver justice. The victim’s father said, “We have faith in the judge.”
However, the mother of the deceased doctor expressed disappointment over the CBI investigation, alleging that “other criminals involved in the crime were not brought to justice”.
The bereaved mother said, “There is not only one person involved in the crime, yet the CBI has failed to catch others. If we have to prevent future crimes in the society, such criminals have no right to live.” “
The doctor’s rape-murder that took place on August 9 last year had sparked outrage across the country and led to prolonged protests.
Roy, a former civilian volunteer of the Kolkata Police, was arrested a day after the incident, and the case was later transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Found guilty of sexually assaulting the doctor and strangulating her to death, Roy was convicted by the judge under sections 64, 66 and 103 (1) of the Indian Code of Justice (BNS).
Section 64 (rape) of the BNS provides for a minimum punishment of 10 years and up to life imprisonment. Section 66 (Punishment for causing death or continuing unwell of the victim) provides for a minimum punishment of 20 years which may extend to imprisonment for life, which shall mean imprisonment for the remainder of the natural life of the person, or death. With.
Section 103(1) (murder) of BNS provides for death penalty or life imprisonment for a person convicted of the offence.
Judge Anirban Das of the Additional District and Sessions Court, Sealdah, will hear Roy’s statement at 12:30 pm on Monday before announcing the sentence.
