Debris from hill blocks Badrinath Highway in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath


Officials said on Thursday that vehicular movement on the Badrinath National Highway was stopped due to heavy debris falling from the hill on the road at Bhanerpani in Joshimath.

Earlier on Wednesday, the road was blocked due to landslide from the hill near Patal Ganga Langsi Tunnel on Badrinath National Highway.

Speaking to ANI, Chamoli District Magistrate (DM) Himanshu Khurana said, “Badrinath Highway 07 is blocked due to heavy debris falling from the hill on the road at Bhanerpani in Joshimath.”

He said that the road has been opened for foot traffic in Joshimath.

He said, “The work of opening the road for vehicles is going on by BRO along with the teams of the district administration.”

Heavy rains in parts of Uttarakhand over the past few days led to landslides in the hills and the highway leading to Badrinath was blocked at several places due to debris.

Earlier on July 5, traffic was disrupted for several hours due to debris at two places on Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district.

According to Chamoli Police, Badrinath National Highway was blocked due to debris near Angthala in Kotwali Chamoli area. The incident was reported to have taken place around 6.54 am.\

Local officials and police launched an operation to clear the debris and traffic resumed at both the locations after three hours.
