Devendra Fadnavis directs Sambhaji Maharaj’s action against “objectionable” Wikipedia content

Mumbai:

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that he had directed the state cyber police to contact Wikipedia, and asked to remove the ‘objectionable’ material about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on the popular online encyclopedia.

The distortion of history on open-sources platforms such as Wikipedia will not be tolerated, he told reporters, replying to a question about some organizations in the state, allegedly identified misinformation.

The objection came against the background of the recently released Hindi film “Chhawa”, which was based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, son of the prestigious Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. “I have asked the Inspector General of Maharashtra Cyber Cell to communicate with the officials of Wikipedia and asked him to remove the objectionable case against Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. We will not tolerate such writing on open sources platforms, Where the historical facts are distorted.

However, the Chief Minister said that Wikipedia does not work with India, and is managed by volunteers who have editorial rights.

He said, “We can ask them to implement some rules that will stop such deformation of facts.”

Wikipedia is a free-material online encyclopedia, written and maintained by a community of volunteers through open cooperation.

On the widespread issue of social media regulation, the Chief Minister accepted the challenges created by judicial boundaries.

He said, “There is no geographical jurisdiction for social media. It was earlier. We will discuss it with the central government.”

No one is “freedom of expression of uncontrolled freedom”, Devendra Fadnavis said, who holds the portfolio of the house. “When the obscenity crosses the border, action can be taken,” he said.

The Chief Minister also warned against unauthorized sharing of cabinet agenda documents before the cabinet meeting. He said, “I have instructed the offices of the ministers not to share the cabinet agenda in advance. I have to take action if it continues. Do not break the law,” he said.
