Explained: Bus conductor attack deepens Maharashtra-Karnatak dispute

Bus services between Karnataka and Maharashtra have come to a standstill after being under stress on Friday, when a bus conductor was beaten up in Belgavi for not allegedly responded in Marathi. In an anti -anticonvolent step, some unknown individuals attacked a bus driver of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) in Chitradurg district of Karnataka and turned black.

The attacks have suspended bus services between the two states. Karnataka and Maharashtra Transport Corporations have banned their operations citing security concerns for passengers and employees.

Event in Belgavi

Recently there was a dispute in an area in Belagavi district of Karnataka on Friday in Tiger Marihal for Flair-up. A conductor of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus was allegedly attacked by a group of men for not responding to a passenger in Marathi. According to the police complaint by the conductor, a girl had sought a ticket in Marathi. When he said he did not understand Marathi and requested him to speak in Kannada, he and his male partner allegedly attacked him.

The situation quickly rose when a large group stopped the bus and conducted a physical attack on the conductor. The police have arrested four persons involved in the attack. However, the conductor was also booked under the sexual offenses (POCSO) Act under the safety of children, when the girl filed a complaint alleging ‘indecent behavior’.

Which appears to have an anticiprtic act, a bus driver of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) was attacked the next day at Hariyur Taluk in Chitradurg district of Karnataka. The victim, Bhaskar Jadhav was darkened with paint by unknown persons. The police have arrested several persons in connection with the incident.

Subsequently, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik stopped Karnataka MSRTC bus services. He said that a MSRTC bus from Bangalore to Mumbai was attacked in Chitradurg around 9:10 am on Friday.

On Sunday, an ultra-Luxury KSRTC bus in Maharashtra was brutally vandalized, raising slogans like ‘Jai Maharashtra’, ‘Marathi’ and ‘Maharashtra Navneman Sena’.

Given the increasing enmity, Karnataka has also reduced its bus services for Maharashtra. “We have limited the number of buses going to Maharashtra and are taking all precautions to normalize the situation,” a senior official of the North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) told PTI.

He said, “We are in touch with our Maharashtra counterparts to resolve a smooth resolution and bus services.”

historical context

Belgavi, a district with a Marathi-moving population, has been at the center of a historic border dispute between the two states. Maharashtra has repeatedly claimed several other villages along with Belagavi (formerly Belgaum) and border, arguing that he has false in India’s Historical Act to resume the boundaries of the state in 1956. Was assigned from and four years later Maharashtra is formed.

The Karnataka government has strongly opposed any such claim. To strengthen its position, it has created a Savaran Vidha Saudha in Belagavi, where the State Legislature holds the annual session.

In 1966, the Mahajan Commission ruled in favor of Karnataka, rejecting Maharashtra’s claims on Belgavi. However, Maharashtra refused to accept the verdict and took the matter to the Supreme Court in 2004, where it is pending.
