German Chancellor Olaf Sholaz faced “bitter” defeat after his center-left social democrats for heavy losses in Sunday’s national elections.
“The electoral outcome is poor and I tolerate responsibility,” Sholaz told the members of the SPD party, while congratulating the conservative opposition leader Frederick Merz, whose party was at the top.
