Newswise – The annual Taobook International Literary Festival, held in Taormina, Sicily, has announced its 2024 Taobook Awards, naming Professor Antonio Giordano, MD, PhD, president and founder. Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO), this year’s recipient of the Da Vinci Prize. Giordano’s selection recognizes his many contributions to the advancement of medical and scientific causes in Italy and around the world, particularly his efforts to regulate cancer-causing pollutants and environmental health hazards.

“Professor Antonio Giordano, a renowned cancer researcher, was recognized for his work on environmental health and its relationship to cancer,” say festival organizers.

“The effects of DNA damage caused by pollution of our environment threaten us all,” says Giordano. “I believe it is essential to address the relationship between human health and environmental toxins.

“Professor Giordano’s work on the One Health approach highlights the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling global health issues.” Organizers of the festival add reference to the newly formed initiative of the Italian Ministry of Health. “This sentiment embodies the essence of the awards – a celebration of knowledge, creativity and the interconnectedness of all living things.”

Giordano adds, “I am driven by a passion for research and a commitment to making a positive social impact.” “Through a one health approach, we can demonstrate the critical need to monitor environmental damage to protect human health.”

The Taobuk da Vinci Prize was established in 2014 to promote dialogue between scholars, artists, journalists and thinkers. Apart from celebrating individual achievements, the festival also aims to inspire future generations to pursue their passions and contribute meaningfully to society.

Other award winners include performing arts pioneer Marina Abramovic; Shashank Joshi, expert in defense and security analysis; David Sharia, a leader in global counterterrorism efforts; and Roger Hering, a distinguished journalist.

The festival also celebrated digital ethics scholar Maria Rosaria Taddeo; Derrick de Kerkhove, a sociologist who studies media theory; Etgar Keret, a famous writer; John Fosse, Nobel Prize-winning author; and filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, Academy Award and Golden Globe winner.

“I also want to congratulate my fellow award winners,” says Giordano. “I am honored to be included among these distinguished individuals and commend them for their contributions to the rich culture of creativity and service celebrated by Taobook.”
