Giving on photosynthesis: How a borrowed bacteria gene allows some marine diatter to stay on a marine algae diet

A group of diatter species belonging to Nitzachia genus left on photosynthesis and now obtained their carbon directly from their environment, thanks to a bacterial gene raised by an ancestor. Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory, Gregory Jedd of Singapore, and colleagues have reported these findings in a study published in Open-access Journal Plos Biology.
