A flexible and flexible battery bag filled with strategically placed pores is more breathable than cotton. This can make it an ideal power source for weaeble sports or fitness devices manufactured directly into clothing.
“It is particularly useful for those athletes or individuals who wear electronics for a long time – smart clothes, medical monitoring equipment and similar applications for fitness tracking that demand both comfort and reliable performance,” says . Lin Zoo At Yale University.
To design the new battery, Xu and her colleagues created a long, rectangular hole in a pouch cell battery – a type of lithium battery that resembles a flat bundle with limited twist. The simulation showed how the chain of rectangular holes enabled the battery to pull or bended the battery without a torn 180 degrees compared to the squares or circles with squares or circles.
“A challenge was to maintain enough active material to keep the energy density of the battery high – much or very large holes will reduce energy storage capacity,” says Joo. “We had to balance mechanical stretch capacity with electrical performance.”
When extended to 10 percent or turns, the battery design with holes can still oppose physical stress and continue to provide electricity to LED light bulbs – each stretching and folding experiments were done 100 times. Testing in the temperature and humidity chamber also revealed that the battery was double breathable compared to cotton.
As a practical performance of potential uses, the researchers wrapped the battery in a lab coat and tested its performance, while the wearer continued to run around while exercising. Its holes enabled the battery to fasten the heat so that it does not feel pain or sweating on the skin of the wearer.
The battery still requires more broken testing, so researchers are planning to test its performance in commercial health monitoring devices and sports gear.
They are also investigating how to increase production in the best way – to avoid leaks or short circuits in battery pouches, automatic manufacturing must be able to provide frequent holes placements and sealing.
