A human resource manager in Shanghai, China was caught embezzling 16 million yuan (US $ 2.2 million) from his company by building 22 fictional employees. As South China Morning PostYang, Human Resource Manager, was responsible for the management of parole for temporary workers in a technical firm. He exploited the lack of inspection, finding out that he had the only control over the employee placement and salary payment.
Yang then created a fake employee record for someone named Surya and applied for payment of salary on his behalf. Then he transferred funds to a bank card under his control, but not in his name.
When the Labor Services Company investigated why the salary of the sun was not deposited, Yang convicted the delay on the tech company. However, it was later revealed that Yang was preparing a record for 22 fictional employees since 2014, embezzling a total of 16 million yuan (Rs 19,22,42,560) in salary and severe salary. The personal salary of “ghost employees” was not disclosed.
The scam was eventually exposed in 2022 when the finance department of the tech company noticed that Sun had a suspicious presence record and always, despite never seen in the office, received salary payment on time. Officers were informed, and an investigation was initiated.
The intensive investigation of attendance records and bank transactions highlighted Yang’s detailed eight -year plan which included ghost employees. As a result, Yang was sentenced to 10 years and two months in jail for embezzlement. He was also taken away from his political rights for a year and ordered a fine. Additionally, Yang was required to refund 1.1 million yuan (US $ 152,000) of stolen funds, while his family was ordered to return another 1.2 million yuan.
The case reported in the mainland media in March made widespread focus and discussion on social media. One user wrote, “Labor service company’s payroll system had huge flaws, which allowed a person like Yang to take advantage of them.”
Another comment, “Yang is so bold! He stole so much money, while many real employees were suffering from unpaid wages. He should be embarrassed.”
