The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, indicating heavy to very heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.
The weather department said there is a monsoon trough and a cyclonic circulation has also developed over Mumbai, resulting in strong westerly winds.
Orange alert is issued in case of extreme weather. This affects transportation facilities including rail, road and air.
According to the latest data released by the IMD, at 8 am the average rainfall was recorded at 93.16 mm in central Mumbai region, 66.03 mm in eastern suburbs and 78.93 mm in western suburbs.
Kings Circle area of ââMumbai is flooded amid heavy rains in the city. Incessant rain overnight in many parts of Navi Mumbai area has also led to waterlogging at many places.
In central Mumbai, maximum rainfall from 7 am to 8 am was recorded at 28 mm at F/N ward office and Wadala fire station. At Worli Sea Face Municipality School, it recorded 27 mm; In Pratiksha Nagar Municipality School, Savitribai Municipality School and Rawali Camp, it was 26; At Sewri Koliwada Municipality School, it was 25 mm; And in G/S ward office, it was 24 mm.
In the eastern suburbs, Shivaji Nagar Municipality School recorded the highest rainfall of 42 mm, followed by Mankhurd Fire Station at 36 mm. At Chembur fire station, it recorded 33 mm. In the western suburbs, BKC fire station recorded the highest rainfall of 36 mm; In Nariyal Wadi Municipality School, it was 32; At Pali Chimbai Municipality School, Vile Parle Fire Station and Supari Tank Municipality School, it was 30.
However, the rains have not affected railway traffic and it is running smoothly. But there was an update on the change in routes of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) buses in Sion, where buses on road number 24 and routes number 10, 25 and 341 have been diverted via Sion Circle.
Palghar region of Maharashtra is also receiving heavy rain since this morning, as IMD has issued Orange Alert in this region in its warning.
IMD said that there will be heavy rain at isolated places in Mumbai for the next three to four hours. “Intense rainfall is likely at isolated places over Mumbai districts during the next 3-4 hours,” the IMD said.
In its warning today, IMD has issued yellow alert in Thane and Raigad areas. The city faced major waterlogging and traffic problems due to heavy rains a few days ago. The IMD had earlier issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and Palghar regions for today and an orange alert for Thane and Raigad regions.
IMD had predicted heavy rain at isolated places in Mumbai till July 12. Heavy to moderate rain was also expected in Palghar, Thane, Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Sangli, Solapur, Aurangabad, Jalna, Parbhani, Beed. Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, Osmanabad, Akola, Amravati, Bhandara, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Gondia, Nagpur, Wardha, Washim and Yavatmal till July 12.
