Is America currently in a habitat crisis? Sherry Lawson Clarke says that at all economic levels, individuals-from home-bound population to moderate income house are struggling with power.
Contributed to the national report of 2020 Displaced in americaClarke’s research examines the intersections of housing policy with health and welfare policies. She is developing a new housing stability measures for use across the US to address housing strength and access.
Is America facing a housing crisis?
Yes. As a cultural anthropologist, I am interested in methods in which the housing crisis is experienced on a personal level. A homeless person is experiencing a housing crisis as he has a moderate -income homeowner whose housing costs have exceeded their income. Right now, the question is not necessary that we are in a habitat crisis, but are we in a place where we are likely to see the next great recession. I think we are in a place where we need to pay attention.
How does this moment compare the 2007 subprime mortgage crisis that caused the great recession?
Similarly, 2007 did not begin in 2007 subprime hostage in 2007; It began in the mid-1990s-almost a decade before the financial crisis of 2008. Today, many Americans find themselves unable to bear the housing. According to the US Housing and Urban Development Department, the average homeowner or tenant should not spend more than 30% of its monthly income at the house. My research shows that individuals are spending half of their monthly income at housing costs. This means that there is little left in their budget for other requirements. According to the National Housing Conference, a non-profit organization dedicated to affordable housing, two issues define the US’s new housing crisis: one, skyrocketing housing costs and two, low rates of black house owners, which is lower than today when isolation was legal when the separation was legal.
What does your research show?
My current research study will highlight the decision making processes of the owners of the house and examine the housing access in one of the high-poverty census tracts of the eastern Winston-Salem, northern Carolina. I hope that the findings will help a lot in a newly created housing stability measures for use in the whole of America (and beyond) in addressing the ability and access to housing.
How do housing strength challenges vary between urban centers, suburbs and rural areas?
Available houses vary in urban areas with multiple family houses, suburban areas with single-family houses and more built housing and rural areas with single-family residence. However, all these regions face housing power concerns, which is estimated to be spoiled with the current changes occurring at the federal level.
Who is the most at risk and what can be done?
The weakest people in all areas are being displaced. It is now time to think outside the box to develop the option of traditional housing models. For example, limited equity cooperatives provide long -term ability to the inhabitants who own shares in a development. Reducing zoning restrictions allows multi-family and small homes to be built on zoned lands for single-family houses.
