A new way of gauge the distance using lasers can measure a length of more than 100 kilometers within a thousandth of a human hair width, and can be used to create better space binoculars.

In lab-settings, scientific lasers can be used to measure distance with extreme precision, within some nanometers. But for a long distance of one kilometer or more, the accuracy of these techniques is greatly reduced, within a millimeter.
