Manipur: Normal life affected due to 12-hour ‘complete bandh’ in Kuki-dominated areas

Normal life was affected in at least four districts of Manipur due to a 12-hour “complete bandh” called by a prominent Kuki organization in the northeastern state to protest against the arrest of five people from the community.

Markets, educational institutions and banks remained closed in Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawal and Tengnoupal districts due to the strike called by Kuki Impi from 6 am to 6 pm, official sources said. He said that low attendance was also recorded in government offices.

Sources said security has been beefed up in Churachandpur and Kangpokpi to ensure that no untoward incident occurs. In Churachandpur and Tengnoupal, protesters demonstrated at several places and raised slogans condemning the arrests.

Kuki Impi said in a statement on Tuesday that the recent arrests of two people in Jiribam and three others in Kangpokpi “pose a significant security threat” to them.

More than 200 people have died in caste violence in Manipur since May last year, while thousands have been rendered homeless.
