Srinagar:
For the first time in 35 years, a national slant was evoked in Tral in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Sunday as patriotic songs marked the celebration of the 76th Republic Day.
Once a bastion of terrorists and separatists, Trall Town reverberated with patriotic songs and chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as PDP MLA Rafiq Naik joined nearly 1,000 participants in the Republic Day function.
Residents of the south Kashmir town said it was perhaps the first time that the national flag was hoisted at Tral Chowk on Republic Day.
The flag was jointly hoisted by an elder, a youth and a child, symbolizing the unity of the generations and their shared commitment to the nation.
A senior security forces officer, who was present at the event, said, “This occasion marks a significant change for Tralee, known for unrest, as it embraces peace, progress and national integration.”
Reflecting cooperation between local communities and security forces, the ceremony proceeded peacefully amid heightened security by Rashtra Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir Police and CRPF.
“The sight of people from all walks of life waving the tricolor was a testament to Trall’s transformation and its aspirations for harmony and development,” the official said.
He said the youth’s participation underlined their desire for a bright and unified future rooted in the ideals of democracy.
As the tricolor fluttered obliquely against the backdrop of jagged mountains, it became a symbol of the trawl’s journey to peace, progress and its renewed dedication to the values enshrined in the Indian Constitution, he said.
