13th April is the fifth day of Navratri. On the fifth day of Navratri, Skandamata, the fifth form of Adishakti Goddess Durga, is duly worshipped. Kartikeya, son of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati, is also known as Skanda. Being the mother of Lord Skanda, the mother is known by the name Skandamata. Goddess Skandamata is the mother of the world who gives desired results to the devotees and destroys the wicked. Story of Skandamata-
According to a legend, it is said that there was a demon named Tarakasura. Whose end was possible only by the hands of Shiva’s son. Then Mother Parvati took the form of Skanda Mata to train her son Skanda (Kartikeya) for war. Lord Kartikeya had killed Tarakasura after taking combat training from Skandamata.
Skandamata is also known by these names-
Skandamata is Parvati, daughter of Himalaya. She is also known as Maheshwari and Gauri. She is called Parvati because she is the daughter of the mountain king Himalaya. Apart from this, due to being the wife of Mahadev, she was named Maheshwari and because of her fair complexion, she is called Gauri. Mother loves her son very much. This is the reason why a mother finds it best to be called by her son’s name. It is believed that the devotees who read or listen to the story of Skandmata are blessed with the blessings of having children, happiness and wealth.
