Papamochini Ekadashi story
It is mentioned in the scriptures that Lord Krishna himself told the importance of Papamochini Ekadashi fast to Pandu’s son Arjun. It is said that when King Mandhata asked sage Lomash how to attain freedom from sins committed unknowingly? Then Lomash Rishi narrated a mythological story to the king while mentioning the Papamochani Ekadashi fast. According to the story, once Medhavi, son of sage Chyavan, was doing penance in the forest. At that time an Apsara named Manjughosa was passing by there. Then that Apsara’s eyes fell on Medhavi and she became fascinated by him. After this, Apsara made many efforts to attract Medhavi towards herself.
Seeing Manjughosa doing this, Kamadeva also came to help her. After this, Medhavi got attracted towards Manjughosa and he forgot to do penance to Lord Shiva. After time passed, when Medhavi realized her mistake, she blamed Manjughosa and cursed her to be a vampire. Due to which Apsara became very sad.
Apsara immediately apologized for her mistake. Hearing Apsara’s apology, Medhavi told Manjughosha about Papmochani Ekadashi of Chaitra month. Manjughosha observed the fast of Papmochani Ekadashi as per the advice of Medhavi. Due to the virtuous effect of Papamochini Ekadashi fast, he got freedom from all sins. Due to the effect of this fast, Manjughosa again became an Apsara and went back to heaven. After Manjughosha, Medhavi also fasted on Papmochani Ekadashi and by removing his sins, he regained his lost glory.
