According to mythology, once Yudhishthir asked about the name, deity and method of worship of Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. Then Krishna ji told a story to Yudhishthir, which Brahma ji had told to Mahatma Narad. Narad asked Brahmaji – To worship Lord Vishnu, I want to know from you which is the Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month? Brahmaji said- You have asked me an excellent question. Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Bhado month is known as Padma. Lord Hrishikesh is worshiped on that day. In the Suryavansh, a Chakravarti named Mandhata became a truthful and glorious Rajarshi (who is both a king and a sage). There was no famine in his kingdom. The people were not troubled by mental worries and there was no outbreak of diseases. His subjects were fearless and financially prosperous. The Maharaja’s treasury contained only honestly earned money. In his kingdom, people of all castes and ashrams were engaged in their respective religions. The land of Mandhata’s kingdom was fruitful like Kamdhenu. During his reign, the life of the people was quite happy.

Once due to the fruits of some deed, there was no rain in the king’s kingdom for three years. Due to which the people suffering from hunger started getting destroyed. The people came to the king and said that he should listen to the people. Water is the abode of God. That is why he is called Narayan. Lord Vishnu is omnipresent in the form of Narayana. He is the one who takes the form of clouds and causes rain, and through rain, food is produced and the people survive through food. Maharaj, at this time the people are dying without food, so please find some solution.

The king said that you are right, food has been called Brahma. Animals survive only on food. It is also described in detail in the Puranas that the people suffer due to the atrocities of the kings, but when I think about it, I do not see any crime on my part in this. Still, I will do my best for the welfare of the people.

Having decided this, King Mandhata along with some people set out towards the forests to pay obeisance to God. There he met sages and ascetics. One day he saw Brahmaputra Angira. As soon as the king saw him, he folded both his hands and bowed at the feet of the sage. The sage also accepted the king’s greetings and asked about the kingdom. The king informed about the condition of the people and asked about the health of the sage. The sage gave seat and ardhya to the king. When the sage asked the reason for the king’s arrival, the king told that everything was going well in his kingdom, but due to some reasons there was lack of rain. I don’t know the reason for this.

Rishi Angira said, Satyayuga is the best era. In this people remain engaged in contemplation of God. In this era, only Brahmins are ascetics, not other people. In your kingdom a Shudra does penance and due to this there is no rain. You should perform a yagya to counter this, so that this defect can be pacified.

The king said, Munivar, he is engaged in penance and has no crime. Therefore I will not hinder his penance. You preach some religion that pacifies the evil. Then the sage said that if it is so, then observe the fast of Ekadashi. Ekadashi is celebrated in the name of Padma in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. The effect of this fast will definitely solve the problem and you can observe this fast with your subjects and family members. Hearing these words of the sage, the king returned home and along with the people of all four castes, observed Padma Ekadashi fast on Shukla Paksha of Bhadon month. Due to this fast, it started raining in the state and the earth started beautifying with lush green agriculture.

Lord Shri Krishna said that for this reason Yudhishthir should observe Padma i.e. Parivartini Ekadashi fast. By reading and listening to this Vrat Katha, all the sins of a person are destroyed.
