Pitru Paksha 2024 : Every year, Shraddha Paksha starts on the full moon date of Bhadrapada month. During this time, Shraddha, Tarpan and religious rituals are performed for the ancestors and forefathers. According to astrologer S.S. Nagpal, this time the beginning of Shraddha Paksha will be considered from Pratipada Tithi on 18th September and will end on 2nd October (Sarva Pitru Amavasya). In Hinduism, the period of Pitru Paksha is dedicated to ancestors and forefathers. Some activities are also prohibited during this period. Do not do this work during Pitru Paksha
During Pitru Paksha, consumption of stale food, bottle gourd, radish, black salt, sattu, lentils, mustard greens, brinjal, onion, garlic, meat, liquor and tamasic food is prohibited.
It is believed that white sesame should not be used in Shraddha Paksha. Use black sesame seeds for tarpan during Shraddha.
During Pitru Paksha, all auspicious activities including marriage, house-warming, Mundan Sanskar and engagement are prohibited.
During Pitru Paksha, one should stay away from abuses, deceit, fraud, jealousy and negative thoughts. During this period, do not insult anyone knowingly or unknowingly. It is said that this makes the ancestors angry.
Buying new clothes and jewelery is also prohibited during Pitru Paksha.
It is considered mandatory to follow the rules of celibacy in Shraddha Paksha.
Make sure to take out food for the cow and dog during Pitru Paksha. Do not let beggars and needy people leave home empty handed and do charity work as per your capacity.
Cutting nails, beard and hair is also considered prohibited during Pitru Paksha.
Apart from this, during Pitru Paksha, do not perform Pitru Tarpan and Shraddha at night. Shraddha rituals are considered auspicious after sunrise.
