A close eye on Pompei’s stone-stained streets has shown that the Roman through the ancient city changed dramatically after joining the Roman world.

Although often seen as a quintaceant Roman place, Pompei was anything but. For many centuries it was actually operated by a separate people, known as samnites – and even after falling near the Romans in 89 BC, Pompei gave a mark of his samnight identity.
