Preparation to teach Manusmriti to law students in DU, know why professors are opposing

Delhi University News: Preparations are underway to include Manusmriti in the curriculum of the Law Faculty of Delhi University, about which some professors have expressed concern. Manusmriti will be taught in the graduation curriculum under the paper named Legal Method. A letter has been written to the Vice Chancellor of DU in protest against this.

According to the Indian Express report, the revised syllabus will be placed before the Academic Council for Academic Matters of DU on Friday which will pass it for implementation in the academic session in August.

Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Anju Wali Tikku, said, “Manusmriti will be included under NEP 2020 to present the Indian perspective of learning and understanding.” The Social Democratic Teachers Front is opposing it. It has written a letter to DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh on Wednesday.

The letter reads, “It has come to our knowledge that Manusmriti has been recommended for students, which is objectionable as it is against the progress and education of women and weaker communities.”

This complaint has been made to the Vice Chancellor
The letter says, “85 percent of the population in our country is marginalized and 50 percent are women. Their progress will come through progressive education system and teaching system. Women’s education and equal rights have been opposed at many places in Manusmriti. Inclusion of any part of Manusmriti in the curriculum is against the basic structure of our Constitution and the principles of the Constitution.

These courses will be brought in DU
Let us tell you that the Law Faculty of DU is also preparing to introduce three new courses on the new criminal law which has come into effect from July 1. Indian Penal Code 1860, Code of Criminal Procedure i.e. CrPC and Indian Evidence Act 1872 have been replaced by Indian Justice Code, Indian Civil Defense Code and Indian Evidence Act respectively.
