About 45 million years ago, a 4.6-foot-long (1.40 m) flightless bird called Diatrima roamed the Geiseltal area in southern Saxony-Anhalt. An international team of researchers led by Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU) and the Senckenberg Research Institute and the Natural History Museum in Frankfurt report on the bird’s perfectly preserved skull in the journal Palaeontologia Electronica.
