Newswise – Rockville, MD (July 11, 2024) –For the first time, researchers have developed a validated tool that allows athletes to estimate whole body sweat rates. The device contains precise equations that help people control the amount of fluids they drink for up to three hours while being active in even the hottest weather. Results of multi-institution study have been published Journal of Applied Physiology, It has been chosen as one of the apschoose Article for July.

Higher sweat rates can result in dehydration, poor performance, and increased risk of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. It is well documented that people underestimate the amount of fluid needed by up to 50% due to sweat loss. On the other end of the spectrum, some athletes drink too much alcohol to compensate for sweat loss, which can lead to low blood sodium levels.

A total of 102 athletes (64 men and 38 women) participated in the study. Researchers collected data from two sites where volunteers completed 158 outdoor cycling trials and 182 outdoor running trials. Each test lasted about 60 minutes and was conducted in weather hotter than 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Whole body sweat rate was calculated based on changes in body mass.

The sweat rate reduction equations developed through this study will allow athletes to properly manage their hydration before participating in outdoor cycling and running and to reach optimal performance. To do this, they input information such as measured or predicted environmental conditions and exercise speed and duration. The resulting data prevents athletes from replacing too much or too little fluid.

These equations are the first for such activities based on the biophysics of heat exchange. Before now, accurate pre-workout guidance for athletes did not exist from any reputable source. Researchers have made their forecasting model available to the public An online sweat rate calculator,

The research team suggested that these results are particularly important for athletes competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. “As global warming causes more frequent and extreme hot weather in more months, this information is increasingly important for maintaining health and performance,” said study co-author Mike Sawka, PhD, FAPS.
