Colombo, Sri Lanka:
The Sri Lankan leftist President on Tuesday marked the anniversary of independence from Britain with a pledge to change the image of the poor island nation as a “corrupt” country.
To mark the 1948 power handover, Jet flyovers and a general wide military pageantry of the horse parade were displayed by Anuraa Kumara Dissanayake, a self-served Marxist.
Instead, his government staged a scale-down military march keeping in mind the pledge of officially spending government officially.
He said, “We are committed to replace the global image of Sri Lanka from the country known to the corrupt regime,” he said in a message in a message.
“Despite countless obstacles and deep roots of the previous corrupt political system, the government of people built by collective willpower of citizens is continuously moving forward.”
The government of Dissanayak concluded a long delayed debt reorganization with both bilateral and private creditors at the end of last year, ending the position of Sri Lanka as bankrupt nations.
Sri Lanka missed out in April 2022 after running out of foreign currency to meet the import of food, fuel, medicines and other essential commodities on its $ 46 billion outer debt.
The unprecedented economic recession forced the then President Gotbaya Rajapaksa to step down. His successor, Ranil Women’s Singh, received a bailout loan of $ 2.9 billion from the International Monetary Fund.
Dissanayake, who defeated WesternSinghe in the elections last September, is maintaining difficult austerities introduced under his predecessor administration and vowed to continue the four -year IMF bailout program.
“As the new government, in the last four months, we have laid the foundation for a stable economy and introduced a new political culture,” said Dissanayake.
