Whether it is the rivers cutting through the Earth, melting through lava rock, or water contingent through ice, the channel all bend and bends uniformly back and forth. But a new study led by scientists at the University of Texas in Austin has discovered that channels carved by rivers actually have different decreases for lava or snow cuts.
The exact mechanisms that run the size of these bends are not certain, but researchers cite several previous models that indicate the relationship between the channel’s topography and the flow of fluid within it.
In rivers, the centrifugal force water pushes the water to move faster around the outer edges of the channel and push with more slow internal edges. As a result, the water wires the outer edge and accumulate sediment along the inner edge, which increases the bending of the river.
On the other hand, volcanoes and ice channels, thermal disappear through melting. And because they do not accumulate sediment like rivers, the only change in these channels is with the outer edge of a twist, making them comparatively smaller than their decreasing rivers.
“This distinction establishes a great natural experiment for us, to see if the rivers are bent or shaped in the shape, or the shape is different in volcanoes or ice channels,” Tim Gaudge said, a co-writer of this letter and a assistant professor at the Jackson School of the Department of Earth and Planets Sciences.
These findings may have the ability to use as a clinical tool for sinful channels on other worlds, where the origin of fluid can be unknown and cannot be on the ground to scientific measurements and samples.

In 2024, Juan Wazezer, who won his bachelor’s degree from Jackson School in 2024, led the research while working with Gaudge. He analyzed thousands of turns in rivers and snow channels on Earth and volcanic channels on the moon. Vazakwez said that what he thought was earlier an analysis error, earlier an early indication that the river bending is more extreme size than other channels.
“It was not until we were the parameters for the code set for volcanic channels on the moon, which failed for rivers on Earth, which we realized,” Oh, this is not the mistake of the code. This is an internal different dimension, “said Wazques.
In its analysis, researchers also found that there is a high ratio of the dowstream accent in thermal and ice channels thermal than the rivers.
On Earth, there are several ways to determine the origin of a channel, such as observing the fluid or leaving the geology fingers. On planetary bodies like Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, it is a complicated practice. There, liquid ethane and methane channels cut through water ice – but scientists cannot say whether these channels are caused by sediment transport and deposition like rivers, or if they disappear through melting or dislocation. There is a similar debate about the origin of channels on Mars, where many billion years ago rivers and active volcanoes flowed rivers and active volcanoes.
“These are sinful channels on the edges of Martian volcanoes. Some people have interpreted them as volcanic channels, and some have explained them as rivers that perhaps the snowopack melted at the top of the volcano,” said Gaudge. “We are saying that because the volcanic channel bends so different, you can measure those channels to find out.”
However, Goudge is being used as a difficult and fast rule against this research. When viewed individually, all types of channels may dramatically vary, so Goud said that he would like to list more channels and before it can be widely applied as a clinical tool.
“But I think if we understand it more then it has the ability to be,” he said.
Mariel Nelson, a doctoral student at Jackson School, also contributed to this research and is a co-writer on paper.
