Every year Dahi Handi is celebrated on the ninth date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in Maharashtra and Gujarat. According to religious beliefs, Dahi Handi festival is being celebrated since Dwapar era. In this festival, a handi i.e. an earthen pot is filled with ghee, butter, curd, cashew nuts, sweets and almonds and hung at a height. When is the festival of Dahi Handi?

According to the Panchang, Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated across the country today i.e. on 26th August. Therefore, the holy festival of Dahi Handi will be celebrated on the next day of Janmashtami i.e. 27 August 2024. There is a lot of enthusiasm regarding this festival in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul.

Why is the festival of Dahi Handi celebrated?

It is a religious belief that the festival of Dahi Handi is celebrated every year to display tableaus of the childhood pastimes of Lord Krishna. In childhood, Kanha was very fond of curd and butter. Krishnaji used to eat butter by stealing it from his own house and also from neighboring houses. Mother Yashoda, being upset with this habit of her beloved Kanhaiya, used to fill butter in a pot and hang it at a height, but Kanha used to climb on the shoulders of his friends and break the pot hanging at a height and eat all the butter. That’s why people also called him ‘Butter Thief’. In Hindu religion, the festival of Dahi Handi is considered a festival of happiness, enthusiasm and prosperity.
