Ottawa:
Mark Carney, the new leader of the Canadian ruling Liberal Party, who is ready to become the next Canadian Prime Minister, wanted to “rebuild” stressful relations with India, deteriorating under his predecessor Justin Trudeau. The 59 -year -old former central banker also wants to diversify Ottawa’s trade relations with New Delhi.
Carney won a race to replace Trudeau as the top leader of Trudeau after securing 85.9 percent votes in the Liberal Party Leadership Race.
Recently, before his election, Carney addressed the issue of US tariffs on Canada during a media interaction in Calgary, Alberta, and asked, “What Canada wants to do, there are opportunities to diversify our business relations with equal ideologies, and rebuild relations with India.”
He said, “There is a need to have a common sense of values ââaround that commercial relationship, and if I am the Prime Minister, I look forward to the opportunity to make it,” he said.
An additional benefit for India with Carney Helling Canada will be his knowledge about Ottawa’s economic relations with New Delhi. He previously led both Bank of Canada and Bank of England and also led the Board of Brookfield Asset Management, which has invested in India’s realty, renewable energy and infrastructure areas. He vacated the post in January.
Any attempt by Ottawa can be welcomed by New Delhi to improve bilateral relations, especially the tariffs of US President Donald Trump affect the two countries amid threats. Canada can also increase the issue of Ottawa, with being one of the top sites for Indians abroad, which can also increase the issue of restricting immigration and tightening visa norms with new Canadian leadership.
India canada relationship
After Trudeau in September 2023, the relations between India and Canada decreased an all -time, alleging that the Indians were involved in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijar on June 18 that year. New Delhi repeatedly denied the allegations, called them “baseless”. Subsequently, the two countries expelled the top diplomats of each other.
Ottawa also stopped the initial progress trade agreement, which would have concluded in 2023.
