Trump cut $ 400 million from Columbia University over anti-Jewish claims

Washington:

The administration of President Donald Trump said on Friday that it was cutting $ 400 million in the federal grant to Columbia University, claiming that “the institution was standing in front of the frequent harassment of Jewish students” after the anti -Israel protests.

Four government agencies announced in a statement “Federal grants and immediate cancellation of about $ 400 million in federal grants and contracts due to continuous inactivity of the school due to continuous harassment of Jewish students.”

Trump said earlier this week that he would cut funding for schools that allow “illegal protests”, their latest threat to the country’s education system to shut down the flow of federal funds.

American complexes, including Colombia, were shaken by student protests against Israel’s war in Gaza after the attacks of October 7, 2023 last year, igniting the allegations of anti-Jews.

Friday’s statement issued by US General Services Administration said that the deduction was “the first round of action” – and expected to follow additional cancellation.

Linda McMahon, secretary of education, said, “Since October 7, Jewish students have faced tireless violence, intimidation and anti-Jewish harassment in their premises-Covers are ignored by those who are protecting them.”

“Universities must follow all federal discrimination laws if they are going to receive federal money,” he said.

“For a very long time, Colombia has abandoned the responsibility of Jewish students to study on their premises. Today, we demonstrate Colombia and other universities that we will not tolerate their frightening inactivity anymore.”

The university did not respond to the remarks request.
