Washington:
The US Senate on Thursday appointed John Ratcliffe as a director of the CIA with heavy bilateral support, who will fill an important position in President Donald Trump’s national security team.
The upper house of the US legislature voted 74–25 to approve Ratcliffe, who served as National Intelligence Director during Trump’s first term.
During his confirmation hearing last week, Ratcliffe said that under his leadership, the agency would produce “practical, objective, all source analysis, will never let political or individual prejudices dominate our decisions or affect our products. . “
He also targeted Beijing, saying that the CIA needs to continue attention and intensity on the dangers generated by China and its ruling Chinese Communist Party. “
And he emphasized the importance of focusing the agency as a target, saying that it is “more important than ever to understand the abilities of opponents on that front.”
Ratcliffe, a former federal prosecutor, was American representative to Texas by 2015-2020 – a period in which he helped defend him during the first impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Trump then appointed Ratcliffe as a national intelligence director, who would lead the American intelligence community and serve as the Chief Advisor to the President on that subject.
