Who will be the PM of Nepal? Prachanda resigns after losing trust vote

Nepal PM Looses Vote of Confidence: Friday (July 12) proved to be a bad day for Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, the former Prime Minister of Nepal. He lost his confidence vote in the Parliament. After this he also resigned from his post. After which now the question is being raised that who will become the next Prime Minister of Nepal?

Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal could not win the vote of confidence in the lower house of parliament. Only 63 votes were cast in his support while 193 votes were cast against it. In this, one MP did not participate in voting. A total of 258 MPs were present in the Parliament.

Had won trust vote 4 times, lost for the fifth time

Last week, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) had withdrawn its support to his government. In the country’s 275-member House of Representatives, 69-year-old Prachanda got 63 votes, while 194 votes were cast against the trust motion. At least 138 votes were required to get the trust vote. After assuming office on December 25, 2022, Prachanda was successful in getting the trust vote four times, but this time he failed.

Who is the separate Prime Minister of Nepal?

The CPN-UML, led by former prime minister KP Sharma Oli, had last week withdrawn support to the Prachanda-led government after it signed a power-sharing agreement with the Nepali Congress, the largest party in the House. Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has already supported Oli as the next Prime Minister. Nepali Congress has 89 seats in the House of Representatives, while CPN-UML has 78 seats. In this way, the combined number of both is 167, which is much more than the 138 required for majority in the lower house.
