Story of Sakat Chauth fast
There is importance of listening to the story on the day of Sakat Chaturthi. According to mythological belief, once Lord Mahadev, the Lord of Gods, asked Lord Shiva, his sons Kartikeya and Ganesha as to who among them could relieve the sufferings of the Gods. Then both Kartikeya and Ganeshji declared themselves capable for this work. On this Lord Shiva said that whichever of you two will come first after circling the earth. He will go to help the gods. On hearing these words, Kartikeya sat on his vehicle peacock and set out to circumambulate the earth. But Ganeshji got up from his place and circled his parents seven times and sat back down. On returning after parikrama, Kartikeya declared himself victorious. When Shivji asked Ganeshji the reason for not revolving around the earth, then Ganeshji said that all the worlds are at the feet of the parents. Hearing this, Lord Shiva ordered Ganesha to remove the troubles of the gods and blessed Ganesha that whoever worships you with devotion on the day of Chaturthi and offers Arghya to the moon at night, all his troubles will go away.
