What to do on Sarva Pitru Amavasya
Use of black sesame- Black sesame seeds must be used while performing Shraddha rituals. Black sesame seeds are used while preparing Shraddha food, offering tarpan and making rice balls. It is believed that black sesame seeds contain the water of pilgrimage, due to which the ancestors are satisfied and give blessings.
Brahmin feast- There is a tradition of providing food to Brahmins on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya. It is believed that by hosting a Brahmin feast, the ancestors’ soul gets peace.
Use of Kush- Kush is used while performing Shraddha puja or while offering tarpan. According to the Puranas, offering tarpan to the ancestors gives peace to the soul. At the same time, Tarpan should always be given in the name of ancestors and facing towards the south.
Don’t let anyone go hungry- According to Garuda Purana, ancestors can come in any form during Pitru Paksha. In such a situation, if any forgotten person comes to the door on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya, then definitely feed him.
Remove Panchbali- According to beliefs, there is a tradition of taking out Panchabali before the Brahmin feast, which means taking out food for 5 types of living beings. In Panchabali, first food is taken out for the cow, second for the dog, third for the crow, fourth for the deity and fifth for the ants.
Recite the song- Reciting a song on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya is considered very beneficial.
Do charity- By doing charity and charity on the day of Sarva Pitru Amavasya, the ancestors become happy and give blessings for the growth of the family. On this day, money, clothes, grains and black sesame seeds are donated as per one’s capacity.
What not to do on Sarva Pitru Amavasya- Shraddha Food should never be served at night. On this day, family members should not consume tamasic food. At the same time, Brahmins and family members should remain silent during the Brahmin feast. Shraddha food should not be served in banana leaves and steel utensils. Food can be served in utensils made of leaf, silver, copper, bronze. Remember, Shraddha should not be performed by taking loan. On this day one should not insult anyone nor use abusive words.
