Negotiations for the agreement were officially dubbed as a comprehensive economic partnership agreement, formally began in November 2023.

Oman is the third largest export destination in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries for India. India already has a similar agreement with another GCC member UAE that came into force in May 2022.

Bilateral trade has declined by $ $ 12.39 billion (export $ 4.47 billion and imports of $ 7.91 billion) to $ 8.94 billion (import of $ 4.42 billion and $ 4.5 billion) in 2023-24.
