Maharashtra Budget: CNG, high motor vehicle tax on electric cars


The Maharashtra government on Monday proposed to increase the motor vehicle tax on compressed-nature-gasons and electric cars with an impact from 1 April.

CNG cars will now attract 1% more road tax in slabs. According to the budget, electric cars above Rs 30 lakh will be taxed at 6%.

  • Maha EV Policy 2021 envisaged any road and RTO tax for all EVS.

  • Road tax increase to add Rs 150 crore to state revenue in FY26.

  • So far, more than 2 lakh CNG cars have been sold in Maharashtra FY25.

  • In 2024, 15,044 electric cars and SUVs were sold in Maharashtra.

  • Maharashtra is 15% of the total electric car sales in India.
