Stressing that Greenland needs to become part of the US, President Donald Trump has said it would be an ‘unfriendly act’ on Denmark’s part if he did not allow that to happen.
Greenland, which is under the control of Denmark, is the largest island in the world.
“I think we are going to get it (Greenland). I think people want to be with us. As you know, there are 55,000 people there. They want to be with us,” Trump told reporters on Saturday.
Trump’s comments follow reports that Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, in a fiery phone call with the US president last week, insisted that Greenland was not for sale.
“I don’t really know what Denmark’s claim is, but it would be a very unfriendly thing if they did not allow this to happen because it is for the safety of the free world. This is not for us. This is for the free world right now,” Trump said in response to a question.
Trump said that the people of Greenland do not like the way Denmark treated them.
“You have Russian ships; You have Chinese ships. You have ships from different countries. This is not a good situation. I am confident that we will achieve it. “I believe we will get Greenland because it really has to do with freedom in the world,” Trump said.
